Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about Structr. Still stuck? Ask in the forum or get in touch.

Can I use AI to develop with Structr?

Yes. Structr's open REST API, scripting and schema make it straightforward to connect AI assistants and build your own AI tooling on top of the platform. For AI-assisted development out of the box, use the Structr Enterprise edition, available as SaaS at structr.cloud or with a commercial license, see structr.com.

What is Structr?

Structr is an open-source low-code platform built on a graph database. Data model, REST API, pages, business logic, workflows and security live in one integrated system, so you can build complete web applications without stitching together separate tools.

Is Structr really open source and free to use?

Yes. The Structr source code is openly available on our GitLab, and you can download, run and self-host it at no cost. Structr GmbH, the company behind Structr, additionally offers commercial support, hosting and enterprise services, see structr.com.

How do I get started quickly?

The fastest way is to try Structr in the browser at structr.cloud. To run it yourself, use the Docker setup (docker compose up -d), the Debian package or the binary distribution from the download page, then follow the Getting Started chapter in the documentation.

How can I report a bug or contribute?

Sign up for the community, then report bugs or submit merge requests on our GitLab. Contributions to the code, the documentation and answers in the forum are all very welcome.

Which database does Structr use?

Structr stores all data, including the schema, pages and files metadata, in a Neo4j graph database. Relationships between records are first-class citizens, which makes complex, connected data models easy to build and query.

Do I need to know how to program?

Not for the basics: data models, pages and permissions can be built visually in the Admin UI. When you need more, you can add business logic in JavaScript or StructrScript, use Cypher queries, and integrate external systems via REST.

Can I run Structr on my own infrastructure?

Yes. Structr runs on your own servers, in your private cloud or on-premises, so your data stays under your control. If you prefer not to operate it yourself, Structr is also available as a managed service at structr.cloud. There is no vendor lock-in: the platform, your schema and your data remain yours.

Does Structr generate a REST API automatically?

Yes. Every type you define in the schema is immediately available through a REST API, secured by the same access control rules that apply to the rest of the application.

How does access control work?

Structr has a fine-grained permission system built in: users and groups, visibility flags for public and signed-in users, per-record grants and type-wide grants. Pages, elements and data are all protected by the same model.

Where can I get help?

Start with the documentation, then ask in the community forum, where Structr users and the core team answer questions. For commercial support, training or consulting, contact Structr GmbH via structr.com.
